We’ve all heard the “fashion rules” that have been passed down for generations. No white after Labor Day, only wear white shoes with a white outfit, etc. But I think it’s safe to say that the world is changing and so are the “rules” that once existed around fashion. At this point, they’re really more like guidelines. Guidelines that you can choose to follow or ignore. When it comes to white, I think it’s a mixed bag.
Would I wear white linen pants into the fall and winter? No. Would I wear white denim? Yes. So what’s the difference? It’s all white?! When I’m choosing what to wear for a season, I focus most on fabrication, then on color. Linen pants into the fall and winter don’t make sense for several reasons. 1) They’re very light fabrics and it’s typically too cold (if you live in a 4 season state) to wear thin breezy fabrics in the fall/winter. 2) They just scream summer and vacation. However, if you went on vacation to somewhere tropical, you have every right to pull those linen pieces out of storage in January.
Denim on the other hand, is seasonless. You can wear jeans all year round, and therefore, we’ve eliminated the fabrication issue. That leaves the color question. When it comes to white, I would say that it depends on what you wear with it. Here I’ve paired my white denim with a mockneck sweater, a heavier tweed jacket (there are summer tweeds and winter tweeds!) suede booties and belt, and a caramel colored bag. These elements help to “autumnize” (pretty sure I made that word up) my outfit.
Knowing how to make your clothing work for multiple seasons will stretch your wardrobe and the money you’ve spent on it. It’s all about pairing a traditionally spring/summer item with more traditionally autumn/winter items. Do this within reason. This doesn’t mean you can take that bright pink floral strapless dress you bought for a summer wedding into the fall and winter. Again, come back to the rules – 1) what is the fabrication? and 2) what is the color?
